Yorkshire Sculpture Park — July Highlights

Set across 500 acres of rolling Yorkshire countryside, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is always worth a visit — but July offers even more reason to go.

This month, the park plays host to several standout exhibitions, including powerful works by William Kentridge, the vibrant and playful designs of Lesley Barnes and Ross McAuley, and the final weeks of Tony Wade’s intricate drawings celebrating ancient trees. Summer of Play: Fun with Featherstone Rovers

This summer, the National Trust have teamed up with the Featherstone Rovers to offer a choice of sports, creative workshops and fun fitness activities — from rugby and rounders to arts and crafts, cheerleading, dance and more.

Expect high-energy fun, team games and a chance to try something new every week. Plus, keep an eye out for special appearances from Featherstone Rovers players and team mascot Percy the Pit Pony.

Brunch Takeover with Tony’s Chocolonely

Pontefract Liquorice Festival

Just under 25 minutes by car from central Wakefield, Pontefract comes alive each July with its famous Liquorice Festival. Dive into a day of hands-on fun, historical discovery and family-friendly entertainment across the town.

At Pontefract Castle, join guided tours of the historic grounds and dungeons (pre-booking required), or take part in a bubble workshop creating thousands of bubbles with various wands and gadgets.

The library hosts liquorice-themed craft activities and a Sphero Liquorice Maze Game, while the museum offers a liquorice trail and sweet crafts. Don’t miss the KLH Events Craft & Gift Fair at the Town Hall, featuring 40 stalls of handcrafted goods and gifts. The market is also buzzing with traders offering liquorice produce and fresh local products.

Discover Wakefield through a new lens on this guided photowalk led by local photographer Emily Ryalls. The session begins at The Art House, where you’ll explore their photobook library and gain insights into Emily’s creative process. Whether you’re using a digital camera, analogue equipment or a smartphone, this workshop encourages you to see the familiar in unfamiliar ways. The day concludes with a group reflection, sharing the images and experiences gathered during the walk.
